Biography of Rocky Delgadillo
Los Angeles City Attorney Rockard J. (Rocky) Delgadillo has devoted his
life and career to creating opportunities for the residents, businesses, and
communities of Los Angeles. Elected City Attorney in June, 2001, he is the
highest-ranking Latino to win citywide office in Los Angeles in over 100 years.
Rocky Delgadillo has earned a reputation as an innovator in government -
unafraid of addressing difficult issues in order to produce winning results for
the residents of Los Angeles. As City Attorney, Delgadillo has outlined a clear
vision for creating a better Los Angeles. His top priorities include improving
public safety and quality of life in LA's neighborhoods through crime
prevention, implementing positive and effective police reform, and reducing the
City's liability expenditures allowing the city to use precious taxpayer dollars
to fund after school programs and other city services.
Prior to being elected City Attorney, Delgadillo served as Deputy Mayor
of Economic Development for Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan. As Deputy Mayor,
he oversaw the City's drive to retain businesses and attract new jobs in Los
Angeles. He created the LA Business Team to promote efficient,
neighborhood-friendly business development in Los Angeles. The City's economy
thrived under his leadership - with the addition of more than 2,000 companies
representing 200,000 employees and more than $20 billion in private investment
in four years. His success has been attributed to his emphasis on collaboration
and ability to bring together business, labor, and community leaders to ensure
that all of Los Angeles' communities share in the City's economic prosperity.
The Los Angeles Business Journal recognized his contributions to LA's business
community by naming him "Government Official of the Year, 1996".
Prior to entering public service, Delgadillo was a Senior Attorney at
O'Melveny and Myers in Los Angeles. He left the firm in the wake of the 1992
civil unrest to join in the efforts to re-build Los Angeles. As Director of
Business Development for Rebuild LA, he acquired nearly $500 million in
investments for neglected communities, initiated 15 private-sector training
programs, and created $6 million loan fund for inner-city entrepreneurs.
Rocky Delgadillo is a native Angeleno. Raised in Los Angeles' Highland
Park neighborhood, he attended public schools and graduated from Franklin High
School. He earned a scholarship to Harvard University where he graduated with
honors, achieving the University Nomination for a Rhodes Scholarship, and earned
recognition as an All-American football player. After a brief career as a
professional football player, Rocky returned home to Los Angeles to teach and
coach the City's public schools. He earned his Juris Doctorate from Columbia
Law School. Columbia University recognized Delgadillo's achievements with the
